The Vital Role of Medical Professionals in Colombia

In the world, there is a great variety of indispensable professions, and among them is medicine. According to El Bosque University, medicine is “a science that allows us to prevent and cure diseases of the human body” from birth until death.

In Colombia, there are currently 126,279 general practitioners and specialists practicing their profession in public or private health centers. Additionally, there are 58 universities offering undergraduate degrees in medicine, with 33 of them holding high-quality accreditation from the Ministry of National Education. Every year, an estimated 3,000 new doctors graduate and are eager to put their knowledge to benefit citizens, as indicated by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.

To practice medicine in Colombia, it is necessary to study a 12-semester or 6-year degree in Medicine. Upon completion, the graduate will obtain a Medical degree that will allow them to process the professional card from the Colombian Medical College. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to continue their academic training to specialize in various branches, such as general surgery, cardiology, dermatology, and internal medicine, among others.

However, obtaining a medical degree is one of the most expensive undergraduate degrees in the country. For example, at the Nueva Granada Military University, the degree costs $18,471,000 per semester, while at the Universidad del Rosario, it amounts to $33,970,000. Nonetheless, there are options for interested individuals, such as enrolling in a public university, obtaining a scholarship from the State, or acquiring an educational loan from a financial institution.
