Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David’s Medical Center

Austin, Texas (ots/PRNewswire)

On April 18 and 19, 2024, the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) hosted its seventh international symposium on complex cardiac arrhythmias, EPLive 2024, at St. David’s Medical Center. This year’s event counted 1,000 registered participants from around the world, including Argentina, Italy and Japan, and more than 250 people attended in person.

Participants included practicing clinical cardiac electrophysiologists, electrophysiologists in training, and general cardiologists interested in treating complex cardiac arrhythmias – conditions in which the heart beats at an irregular or abnormal rhythm. The primary teaching tool was live cases with expert commentary broadcast from the Electrophysiology Center at St. David’s Medical Center, the leading center for robotic electrophysiology in North America.

Live cases using commercially approved pulsed field ablation (PFA) systems were presented at EPLive 2024 – the largest advance in the field of electrophysiology (EP) in decades. The first commercially approved PFA case in the United States was performed by physicians at TCAI earlier this year. PFA produces high-frequency electrical pulses to destroy muscle cells that cause cardiac arrhythmias without using excessive heat or cold. The non-thermal approach does not damage the surrounding tissue and therefore improves patient outcomes.

“The real-world nature of EPLive – current and aspiring electrophysiology experts experience live cases from world-leading electrophysiology experts in diverse settings using new technology – is why this two-day conference is so important,” said Andrea Natale, MD, FHRS, FACC, FESC, Cardio-Electrophysiologist and Chief Medical Director of TCAI and EPLive Course Instructor. “With EPLive we want to positively impact the lives of patients around the world.”

In addition to the TCAI, some of the world‘s leading centers also took part: Albert Einstein College of Medicine (New York), Cleveland Clinic, Houston Methodist, Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute, Massachusetts General, Monzino Heart Center (Italy), St. Bernard’s Heart and Vascular Center (Arkansas), UCLA Health, University of Chicago Medicine, UC Health Center (Colorado), University of Pennsylvania and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

In addition to the demonstrations by Dr. Natale featured EPLive presentations from several TCAI physicians, including course co-director Dr. Amin Al-Ahmad, Dr. John Allison, Dr. Weeranun Bode, Dr. David Burkhardt, Dr. Robert Canby, Dr. Joseph Gallinghouse, Dr. Rodney Horton, Dr. Patrick Hranitzky and Dr. David Kessler.

Physicians received a maximum of 14.5 American Medical Association (AMA) Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA) Category 1 Credit™ hours at the conference.
