The facades of major government buildings in Italy will light up yellow this evening in honor of ‘Endometriosis Awareness Day’. This initiative is aimed at raising awareness about the chronic disease that affects millions of women around the world, including 3 million in Italy.
The President of the Chamber, Lorenzo Fontana, took to social media to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and scientific research for endometriosis. He highlighted that behind every statistic, there is a person with a unique story, pain, and hope.
President Gianmarco Medusei of the Ligurian Regional Council also spoke out about the challenges faced by women with endometriosis. He noted that the diagnosis often comes late, leaving women to cope with physical and psychological consequences alone.
Endometriosis affects between 10 and 15% of women of childbearing age and can cause infertility in 30-40% of cases. Early diagnosis is crucial to avoid the need for extensive surgical interventions that can have a significant impact on both physical and mental well-being.
President Medusei highlighted that the European guidelines for endometriosis were updated in 2022, and efforts are being made to implement them effectively within the Ligurian Health Service. He emphasized the need to continue raising awareness about this condition throughout the year, not just on a designated awareness day.
Medusei also expressed gratitude to the association ‘The voice of one is the voice of all’ and its president Vania Mento, as well as regional tutors for their dedicated work in educating and advocating for women affected by endometriosis in the region.
