New Breakthrough Technology Allows for Artificial Diamonds to be Created in Just 150 Minutes

Natural diamonds have long been known to form over billions of years, under extreme high-pressure and high-temperature conditions deep within the earth. However, with advancements in technology, artificial diamonds can now be created in a fraction of the time it takes for natural diamonds to form.

A recent study conducted by the Korean Institute of Basic Science (IBS) published in the journal Nature, introduces a new method for creating artificial diamonds in just 150 minutes, without the need for high-pressure work. This groundbreaking method utilizes a mixture of liquid metals, eliminating the need for the traditional high-pressure and high-temperature growth technology (HPHT).

Using a homemade cold wall vacuum system, the research team was able to grow diamonds by exposing a liquid metal alloy to a methane/hydrogen mixture at atmospheric pressure and at a lower temperature of 1,025°C. In just 15 minutes, diamond particles were extruded from the liquid metal, and within 150 minutes, a diamond film formed on the subsurface of the liquid metal alloy.

The potential applications of artificial diamonds go beyond just luxury goods, as they are also used by scientists for various experiments such as inducing magnetic fields and exploring new subatomic particles. The research team has further discovered that high-quality diamonds can be grown by replacing certain elements in the liquid metal alloy.

The next step for the team is to expand the potential growth area on the surface of liquid metal and gold, in an effort to produce artificial diamonds on a larger scale. If successful, this new technology could revolutionize the process of creating artificial diamonds, making it faster and easier than ever before.
