Uveitis: what it is, symptoms and treatments

L’uvea it is a tunic of the eye that lies between the sclera and the retina. The red color of the uvea is linked to the very intense vascularization and is divided into three regions: iris, ciliary body and choroid.

Uveitis, what is it

The uvea can also undergo inflammations that often do not affect all three of these structures, but only one. In this case we speak of uveitis. When the entire layer is affected it is referred to as panuveite. This pathological condition can occur at all ages.

Uveitis, symptoms

The symptoms are quite classic. Attention should be paid to hypersensitivity to light, the feeling of blurring, clouding with a decrease in vision. Sometimes there may be pain of varying intensity, hyperemia, that is a very intense redness, and tearing. In some cases, only one eye may be affected. Or it can affect both eyes, but one tends to suffer more than the other.

Uveitis, therapies

From the point of view of diagnosis and therapeutic approach, the word must go to the ophthalmologist. In general terms, there can be a local and general treatment. The local one is based on anti-inflammatory drugs and with substances that act on the pupil because they decongest the ciliary bodies and prevent the creation of very thin adhesions. On the general treatment, here too we must focus on the treatment of phlogosis, that is inflammation.

Depending on the origin of the picture, if there is an infection linked to bacteria, one can also think of broad-spectrum antibiotics that must always be prescribed by the doctor. If, on the other hand, there are systemic autoimmune diseases, drugs can be used for this purpose. There is the possibility of surgical treatment, especially on possible complications of uveitis.

For uveitis it is essential to recognize the presence of the infection early and not to confuse it with conjunctivitis.
