The new doctors who formalize the beginning of their profession with the Hippocratic Oath, the white coats with decades of experience behind them who receive the right recognition with the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ medals. All today at the Aquila theater in Fermo in an afternoon in which the protagonists were obviously them, the Fermano doctors. An event during which the whole healthcare category gathered around the new recruits and those who, having reached age limits, hung up their coats, as well as the two doctors who celebrated 25 years of profession. An initiative that is particularly difficult to organize, according to the president of the Order of Doctors, Anna Maria Calcagni, but even more heartfelt because it “gives us back the enthusiasm to face the new and unpredictable challenges”. Local institutions were present, led by the mayor Paolo Calcinaro and the prefect Vincenza Filippi, and some political representatives, including the honorable Mauro Lucentini and the regional councilors Andrea Putzu and Jessica Marcozzi.
The first speech was that of the mayor, Paolo Calcinaro: “My presence is a duty given what has happened in this period. I can emphasize this as a personal experience (Calcinaro was hospitalized at Murri for Covid), to underline the proximity of the healthcare world perceived as a user of the system. We felt protected, in fact, by this system. There were many fronts and knowledge of the phenomenon was by no means complete. I want to recall the commitment of general practitioners and hospital doctors in the very important vaccination campaign. We will have to continue to make a common front, for our healthcare in Fermo, unique and peculiar with a single access point for a single province that will have to face other challenges, such as the construction of the new hospital ”.
The Prefect Vincenza Filippi was also present and responded to the appeal: “Thanks for the doctors in this difficult year. With countless committees we have faced a historical moment that we did not know which direction it would take. We have worked together with the health care of Fermo. To you – addressing the doctors – a strong thank you for what you will continue to do “.
The speech of the president of the Order, Anna Maria Calcagni, on the occasion of the Hippocratic oath, began by mentioning the “heavy toll” of victims for Covid: “We have had two deaths, Dr. Abdullah Makki and Dr. Tolmino Rossi. Many hospital doctors who have fallen ill, ”he recalled, before asking for a minute to recollect. Then, President Calcagni returned to address young people: “With the Hippocratic Oath, you officially enter professional life. A holistic view of the patient will be needed ”. There are many weaknesses in the health system that emerged during the pandemic: “The disinvestment in the public has been massive, 15% of hospitals have been closed in 10 years. The bleeding of the public national system was not only structural but also in the presence of assistance personnel, a percentage which has decreased by 6% in the last 10 years. The health system is less and less public and the territory has not been strengthened. The flight of doctors from work without reaching retirement is worrying. They pass to the private sector. The Marches are the third region in Italy to show the phenomenon. Generational change in the public sector is not encouraged ”. As Calcagni pointed out, the phenomenon of poverty has increased and public health should guarantee the right to health for the very poor. “The public health service must be efficient, free, timely and in proximity – said Calcagni – In the near future, resources will be allocated more to structures than to personnel. This is the time to recreate a new public health system ”, exhorting the new young doctors sitting in the audience.
On the stage, it was the turn of Massimo D’Onofrio, President of the Cao (Commission of the Register of Dentists), which has 153 members: “The commission began its mandate 6 months ago, with dentists immediately at the forefront, amid a thousand difficulties , for direct exposure to Covid. We have put all our efforts into ensuring the safety of patients and operators. In our Fermo reality, the synergy between the Order and the Vast Area has given effect in a very short time. In this very delicate phase of our professional history, we were able to work together overcoming difficulties and critical moments like in a family. I invite younger colleagues to find their professional home in order ”. The celebration followed, first for the gold medals for doctors with 50 years of profession, then that for 25 years. Finally, it was the turn of the young medical promises to take the stage one at a time, and then read the Hippocratic Oath to which all, in unison, replied: “I swear”.
For the 50 years of service, the doctors Luciano Alessandrini, Armando Benedetti, Massimo Concetti, Vincenzo Palomba, Gianfranco Politini and Elio Carlo Restuccia were awarded. For 25 years Sandra Di Marco and Patrizia Iacopini. Also celebrated were the new members of the Order, namely Adele Agostini, Riccardo Amatucci, Mara Barchetti, Alessandro Burgio, Matteo Catani (dentistry), Elisa Cimadamore, Kimberly Coscia, Crizia Cruciani, Andrea Di Flavio, Beatrice Donati, Irene Fioravanti, Giulia Grisostomi Irene Lubinski, Marianna Lupinetti, Carlotta Mancusi, Rossella Millevolte, Fabio Mori, Eleonora Romitelli, Jasmine Saee, Sara Santarelli, Mario Simonetti, Giulia Spadavecchia, Paolo Tofoni, Maria Vittoria Tosco (dentistry) and Cristina Vesprini.
