World Kidney Day: Awareness Campaign Promotes Kidney Health
On March 14, World Kidney Day will be observed to raise awareness about kidney diseases and the importance of early detection and treatment. With over 850 million people worldwide suffering from kidney diseases, including 4 million in Italy, it is crucial to prioritize kidney health and promote equitable access to care.
Kidney diseases are on the rise due to factors such as aging populations, hypertension, and diabetes. The Italian Society of Nephrology and the Italian Kidney Foundation have joined forces to launch various initiatives, including free screenings and education campaigns, to reach out to the public.
Nephrologists stress the importance of recognizing warning signs of kidney disease, as symptoms often do not appear until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. By adopting healthy lifestyle habits and undergoing regular screenings, the progression of kidney diseases can be slowed down, potentially avoiding the need for dialysis or transplant.
The prevention of chronic kidney disease involves following eight golden rules, such as staying active, maintaining a healthy diet, monitoring blood sugar and pressure levels, and avoiding smoking and certain medications. Symptoms to watch out for include swelling in the legs and ankles, changes in urine characteristics, and increased blood pressure.
Therapies for kidney diseases have advanced in recent years, allowing for the early detection and treatment of renal failure. By consulting with nephrologists and starting appropriate therapies promptly, many patients can avoid the need for invasive treatments like dialysis or transplant.
World Kidney Day serves as a reminder to prioritize kidney health and take proactive steps to protect and preserve the kidneys. By promoting awareness and providing access to screenings and expert consultations, organizations aim to reduce the burden of kidney diseases on individuals and healthcare systems worldwide.
