In the knee we have several ligaments. The outer and inner ligaments and the cruciate ligaments. They cross each other in the joint, as the name suggests. The anterior cruciate ligament prevents the tibia from moving forward too much. And the posterior cruciate ligament ensures that it does not slip backwards. When rotating, the anterior cruciate ligament is under tension and can tear.
