With the artificial pancreas, a new era for diabetes – Medicine

“The artificial pancreas is set to change the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and represents the gateway to a new era of treatment. Better control of glycemic levels not only has an effect on quality of life but also on associated costs , calculated at 10% of global health spending”. Thus in a note the president of the Italian Society of Diabetology Angelo Avogaro.

The so-called ‘artificial pancreas’ is a device for managing diabetes and administering insulin. It consists of a sensor that constantly monitors glucose, connected to a wearable insulin pump that delivers the hormone. “The system uses an algorithm to determine the amount of insulin that must be administered automatically in order to guarantee a stable glucose level, unlike devices that deliver insulin continuously whose changes are entrusted to the patient himself,” he explains Avogaro.

These systems free people with type 1 diabetes from the routine of finger pricks, insulin injections into the abdomen and the burden of diabetes management, Sid explains. However, the green light is awaited for people with type 2 diabetes with uncontrolled diabetes on insulin therapy. In recent months, Great Britain has launched a program to supply devices to people with uncontrolled diabetes 1 or at risk of hypoglycemia. In particular, children, young people, pregnant women or those planning a pregnancy will be selected.

“In Italy there are 300 thousand people with type 1 diabetes”, underlines the Italian Society of Diabetology. “With the use of this type of device, “for them the management of the pathology would become simpler and safer as sudden fluctuations in glucose (in excess or in deficiency) can be fatal”.
