Women and work: empathy will make a difference

The Microsoft Work Index is a study of 31,000 people in 31 countries that analyzes millions of productivity signals on Microsoft 365 and trends on LinkedIn. The latest edition shows that some things have changed compared to last year: the time has come to deal with the end of the emergency. The process is far from homogeneous, because each organization has its own way of understanding hybrid and remote workbut what is evident in the Microsoft study is that Covid has changed our relationship with employment. Compared to before the pandemic, 53% of employees are more likely to prioritize health and well-being than work. Furthermore, 47% of respondents say they are more inclined to put family and personal life above work. Percentage that rises to 55% among parents and 56% among women.

What you need to work today: tools and skills

Two years of the pandemic have given us the opportunity to reflect on how commitment to the family often involves compromises for women with respect to their careers. But in the long term, remote work and hybrid work have the potential to open up more opportunities for women, provided that the company is able to interpret the wishes and needs of employees (and here we would like to call them for what they are: talents).
According to a 2018 Brookings Research Center analysis, 46% of employed women receive low pay, earning an average of just $ 10.93 per hour. Most penalized are black women (54%) and Hispanic or Latino women (64%). Women are much more inclined than men to accept a poorly paid job: only 37% of working men receive a low salary. Part of the difference is explained by the choices before or during their careers: women, more often than men, have opted for an educational path that leads to lower-paid jobs. And some may find flexible hours more important than pay, because it allows them to focus on other family members.

Hybrid work, but with harmony

by David Bevilacqua

During the lockdown, a surprising percentage of Americans lost their jobs, mostly women. So much so that this recession has been defined shecession. Those who weren’t fired may have had to voluntarily give up and it wasn’t difficult as they were already paid little. So their career was interrupted, for some time or forever.
They tell us that once we have a baby our priorities will change, they make us feel guilty if we leave work early to go home to make dinner, while arousing admiration for a man who runs away from the office to the gym. Our role as people capable of caring for others is often downplayed or referred to as limiting our careers, even in academic research. But then we’re asked to do exactly that in the workplace: whether it’s ordering catering for a meeting, throwing an office party, choosing a gift, escorting a guest to the meeting room.

Hybrid work yes, but where? And how and when?

Annual reports on diversity and inclusion from leading companies show that the percentage of women in general and women of color in particular varies very little year after year. But there is progress. For example, Apple’s latest report on diversity and inclusion demonstrates this: at the end of 2021 and with a workforce of over 165,000 people, Cupertino has the highest number of women ever recorded among its employees worldwide. With an 89% increase since 2014, women are now 34.8% of the workforce, with 24.4% in technical roles and 31.4% in leadership positions.

Stem subjects and Italian women: a complicated relationship

by Alessio Jacona

The pandemic has opened up new possibilities and it is our job to exploit them. But the change started earlier, with younger generations gradually abandoning traditional gender roles. And yet, the work environment will not automatically be better if the percentage of women grows: empathy, the openness to the other that we carry with us, will make the difference.
