A revolutionary treatment method for prostate cancer, Irreversible Electroporation (IRE), has been established at the VITUS Private Clinic, led by the world-renowned expert Prof. Dr. mult. Michael K. Stehling. This innovative cancer therapy has proven to be particularly gentle and offers significant advantages compared to conventional treatment methods.
IRE – also known as NanoKnife(TM) – is a method that uses short bursts of electricity to destroy cancer cells without damaging surrounding tissue, blood vessels and nerves. Professor Stehling emphasizes the importance of close collaboration with the inventor of the IRE, Prof. Boris Rubinsky from the University of Berkeley in California. Through joint research and development, important fundamental insights into IRE and other electroporation technologies were gained, which today benefit patients at the VITUS Private Clinic. Technical developments in the IRE method also enable Prof. Stehling to treat advanced cases of prostate cancer and recurrences after prostatectomy and radiation therapy. In a groundbreaking publication in 2019, Prof. Stehling’s research group was able to prove the advantages and effectiveness of IRE in prostate cancer (PloS One, 2019; 14(4): e0215093. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0215093). With more than 1,700 successful treatments, the VITUS Private Clinic today maintains its leading position worldwide in the use of this method.
The increasing acceptance of IRE in the treatment of prostate cancer is also reflected in the fact that several private health insurance companies now cover the costs of this treatment completely. This highlights the transition of IRE from an experimental to an established and recognized treatment modality.
The IRE represents a new era in prostate cancer treatment that is not only effective, but also fully preserves patients’ quality of life. This strengthens the hope of many patients for successful treatment without the serious side effects of traditional methods.
