At Café Cress you can enjoy a weekly changing menu in an accessible and affordable way

Café Cress proves that Amsterdam-Noord has more and more beautiful restaurants to offer. Café Cress has a small menu that changes weekly. The dishes are based on what can be found on the Amsterdam markets. So everything is in season. And super fresh. For the other products we work with small local suppliers – sustainable! The goal of the three owners is to keep it accessible and affordable. This means that you can sit down for a three-course menu, but also just have a snack or drink at the bar. There is also a large terrace in front of the restaurant on the water, where you can sit in the sun for a long time in the summer.

The well-thought-out starters at Café Cress set the tone for the rest of the evening

The map is small; three starters, three main courses and three desserts. If you can’t decide, you can order a three-course chef’s menu, where the chef chooses for you. We did the latter.

As a starter we got homemade mushroom croquettes with lovage mayonnaise. Very tasty, the lava mayonnaise makes the dish special. In addition, we get a 64 degree egg – cooked for a longer period of time at exactly 64 degrees, which makes the perfect soft-boiled egg. This is served with smoked mushrooms and bacon. All this is in a delicious veal jus and sambal foam. A very interesting combination of flavors and not something we have tasted before. A good start to the evening!

The flavor combinations of the main courses are surprising and well thought out

As a main course we taste the fried sea bream. This is served with opperdoezers – small potatoes – topped with samphire and trout eggs. All this is in a beurre blanc with wild garlic oil. Another dish with a surprising – but well-functioning – combination of flavors. We also get roasted cauliflower with curry foam and coconut cream. This is topped with a chickpea crumble with chili and coriander. In our opinion, this roasted cauliflower is the highlight of the evening. The curry foam with the coconut cream in particular is a great combination with the cauliflower. We can eat three plates of that! We get – very cleverly – two pieces of bread with these dishes. We can use this to eat with the last leftover sauce.

Café Cress’ desserts are a perfect ending to the three-course menu

For dessert we get two more dishes. The first seems simple, namely chocolate cake with crème anglais. Despite its simplicity, this is a really delicious chocolate cake that came out of the oven moist. The second dessert is a bit more unexpected – and another surprising combination of flavors. This is vanilla ice cream with apple foam, puffed rye, oatmeal crumble and infused apple with yuzu and ginger. A great end to our evening.

We had a wonderful evening at Café Cress. And as far as we are concerned, it is certainly worth repeating. Next time we come the menu will definitely be different and we can’t wait to see what creations they have come up with!
