An emergency operation at Sant’Eugenio allowed a 30-year-old young man to be saved from a serious thrombosis. The young man is already undergoing dialysis treatment because he suffers from a serious genetic disease, for which both kidneys have been removed and he is awaiting a kidney transplant. Extensive thrombosis developed rapidly within the heart with a large floating thrombus within the cardiac chambers and severe risk of acute embolization with a likely fatal outcome. The team of Professor Achille Gaspardone, Director of the Cardiology Unit of the Sant’Eugenio Hospital, through the use of large caliber probes introduced through a vein in the groin, succeeded in removing the large thrombus by mechanical aspiration thus preventing the risk of thrombus detachment and embolization in the lungs. The procedure, conducted under local anesthesia, was perfectly successful and the patient is in good clinical and haemodynamic conditions. The use of this technique opens up the possibility of treating similar cases without resorting to much more invasive cardiac surgery.
