Health and well-being at the workplace is a major concern for many professionals all over the world. According to Salvatore Zaffina, director of Occupational Medicine at the Bambino Gesù Hospital, the management of violence against healthcare workers, burn-out, staff limitations, the aging of the workforce, and the lack of attractiveness of healthcare professions require an approach that the hospital calls “Parametric-Holistic-Profitable” (POP), one that is based on evidence, strategic planning of work well-being, and verification of its economic convenience.
Zaffina introduced the POP managerial model into the company in which he carries out his activity, and it is becoming best practice. According to him, the model offers a win-win-win logic as it focuses on corporate sustainability, promotes worker well-being, and has an important return for society. The return on investment of the interventions ranges from 200% to 2700%, with a company average of 1000%, and the model has attracted the interest of numerous national and international institutions.
Zaffina has also organized the first master’s degree in Total Worker Health® in Italy, in partnership with the High School of Economics and Management of Health Systems (ALTEMS) of the Catholic University, and every year in June, he organizes a meeting on One Worker Health between all national and international stakeholders.
The path of prevention and well-being at work according to the POP model of the Bambino Gesù Hospital is seen as a fundamental strategic lever to prevent the patient-company from falling ill and to make healthcare professions attractive. Zaffina has ambitions to bring their model to other healthcare companies that have requested it, and he strongly believes that workplace well-being is a win-win-win logic for company-worker-society.
