World Water Day was celebrated on 22 March, an anniversary established by the United Nations in 1992. The objective of the day is to raise awareness among world institutions and public opinion on the importance of reducing water waste and behaviors aimed at combating climate change.

Among the initiatives in the territory of Parma and the Province, Iren has created, together with the Municipalities, the placement of 7 houses to promote the use of water distributed by the water network: the water from the aqueduct is of excellent quality, it is taken from springs or from deep and protected strata, it is good, controlled, comfortable, and also economical.

The water houses are also an ecological choice: the consumption of water from the aqueduct, directly or through the water houses that have been installed in the area, is to be encouraged and spread, as it also contributes to reducing plastic waste from start for recycling or disposal.

The use of these houses in 2023 made it possible to save over 990 thousand bottles equal to over 34 tons of plastic and 65 tons of oil. The overall benefit, in terms of carbon dioxide not emitted, amounts to over 90 tons, not counting the economic savings for citizens generated by the Water Houses throughout the provincial territory.

World Water Day is an important opportunity to reflect on the urgent need to preserve this resource. I am satisfied with the impact had by the public water houses that we have installed, a concrete step for a city committed to an ambitious path of environmental improvement” he comments Gianluca Borghi, Councilor for Environmental, Energy and Mobility SustainabilityThis activity is also part of the overall framework of the initiatives we are developing to make Parma Climate Neutral by 2030. As a council we will continue to work to promote sustainable practices and protect the future of the city“.
