A walk ended in tragedy in the municipality of Jamundí, department of Valle del Cauca, following the death of two members of the same family due to drowning in the Cauca River. Authorities are still searching for one of the bodies.
The situation occurred exactly in the town of Robles, at the point known as the Balsa bridge. There was a 15-year-old girl swimming in the Cauca River, but apparently she suffered a cramp in her leg so she couldn’t swim anymore.
In the midst of the anguish of the spectators, the father of the minor rushed to her rescue, but unfortunately the flow of the river was stronger than him and he ended up losing his life along with his teenage daughter.
In this regard, Captain Élier Viáfara, commander of the township’s Fire Department, mentioned: “Apparently, the girl suffered a cramp and began to ask for help and the father jumped, but he did not have the knowledge and they both drowned.”
In the intervention of the emergency agency, the body of the 15-year-old minor was recovered, meanwhile the firefighters continue with the search work to find the body of the father of the family.
When witnessing a drowning, it is crucial to immediately call emergency services giving clear details about the location and situation of the person. If you do not have water rescue skills, it is important to find someone trained and avoid rescue attempts that involve your own risk. Meanwhile, a floating object such as a plastic bottle with a lid or a rope can be extended to the victim to help them stay afloat.
If the person is rescued from the water and has adequate training, first aid maneuvers can be initiated, always prioritizing breathing. It is key to keep the person in a safe environment, reassure and shelter them, waiting for medical assistance and providing them with all pertinent information upon arrival.
Three people died in the sea and a swimming pool during the beginning of 2024
The sudden death of John Jairo Jaramillo at the age of 60 on the beaches of El Rodadero, in Santa Marta, has generated deep sadness in his family. The visitor from Medellín, who had arrived to celebrate the new year with his loved ones, was at sea away from family care when the incident occurred. Although the relatives were resting at the hotel after eating, they were alerted by emergency cries on the beach, finding Jaramillo being assisted by passersby on the sand.
In the absence of an ambulance, the family took the older adult by taxi to the nearest medical help, although he no longer showed signs of life. The lack of emergency personnel and lifeguards on the beach has been a point of complaint by the family to the media.
Currently, it is being investigated whether his death was the result of a health complication while swimming or due to drowning in a wave.
