a new chronicler for Loja – DIARIO CRONICA

Dr. María Antonieta Valdivieso Cueva.

With pleasant surprise I read in El Diario Crónica de la Tarde, dated the 22nd of this month and year, the news that the president of the Association of Lojanos Residents in Quito, engineer Leonor Palacios Álvarez, on behalf of the organization she represents, has requested the Mayor of our city, Mr. Franco Quezada Montesinos, and through him to the Lojano Council, that the distinguished writer and lawyer Dr. Efraín Mariano Borrero Espinosa (Loja, September 19, 1946), be considered for the Illustrious Municipality of Loja to appoint him as the new chronicler of the city, by virtue of the attributes and qualities he possesses.

For this reason, I have thought it appropriate to highlight that, in his long career of public service, Borrero Espinosa has worked in different State institutions, and also as a lawyer in the free exercise of his profession, always with total dedication, honesty and probity. His other great passion is the love for literature, generally referring to characters and events from our land of Loja, because he is a die-hard Lojano, dedicated entirely to investigating and investigating from reliable and close sources, events that happened in Loja, city and province, since ancient times, which have become true urban legends rightly rescued by Efraín Mariano to integrate them into the living history of Loja. In this regard, the author says that “his writings are the result of a research task with necessary and reliable historical sources to substantiate the verisimilitude of his stories; “All of this so that people know what happened years ago.”

Once again settled in his homeland, after his retirement, Efraín Borrero is dedicated “full time to writing his experiences, telling anecdotes, describing characters and recounting historical events of our Loja of yesteryear.” He has a slot on Fridays on the Meridiano program of the Centinela del Sur Radio Network, called The trunk of memories, in which he delights us with the reading of his stories nuanced by his peculiar style, strength and voice that characterize him, which is why his radio and television space has a large audience. His articles are published weekly in the Diario Crónica de la Tarde, and it is important to highlight that he has maintained the radio program and his editorial column for more than three consecutive years.

His dedication to Loja culture, as well as his historical research, have earned him incorporation, very deservedly by the way, into the National Academy of History, Loja Chapter; and, recently, in recognition of his literary production, designated Corresponding Member of the Benjamín Carrión House of Ecuadorian Culture, Núcleo de Loja.

As we had indicated, he has carried out his investigative work on important events that occurred in our city and province, such as: The independence process of Loja, The Sephardic footprint in Loja, The Conceptas nuns and their monastery; Loja, homeland of cascarilla, Primary education in Loja in the mid-20th century, The scaffold of San Sebastián, Commercial, family and social integration with the Peruvian north, The pilgrimage of the Churonita, Pueblo Nuevo, major word; Alfonso Valdivieso in memory of the Technical Institute; The Leones de Loja Night Schoolamong other important and entertaining stories that are true chronicles of the history of Loja.

Regarding the description and reviews of Loja characters, we find that they are also innumerable, and therefore it is enough to quote: The Coronel brothers in the memory of Loja radio broadcasting, Pueblo Nuevo: national identity, Don Manuel Veintimilla Jaramillo; Dr. Gustavo Samaniego Rodríguez, Dr. Vicente Rodríguez Witt, Dr. Hugo Guillermo González, Dr. Eduardo Vélez Granda, among other important Loja citizens who have contributed to the development of their homeland.

To relate the transcendent events and outstanding Loja characters, Efraín Borrero has carried out a deep and exhaustive investigation of important events in our city that accredit him as a worthy chronicler of Loja, contributing with his work to enrich the living history and the written record of the local historical event, to preserve and promote the identity of its inhabitants with their geographical environment and therefore with the nation to which they belong.

In fulfilling this noble task, it is essentially your responsibility to: a) Investigate and disseminate the past of your locality; and, b) Compile data and documents from the present time and especially those other relevant facts that may be decisive for the fair interpretation of current reality.

We have no doubt that Efraín Borrero would be a qualified and suitable Chronicler of Loja, who would fully fulfill his functions, since he has all the characteristics to be one; Firstly, the immense love for his native land, which fills him with strength to fulfill with total commitment and dedication his function of recording the important acts that happen every day; and, furthermore, his great vocation and enormous aptitude for writing about those events that are forging and forming the new history of Loja, since the events and characters described belong to recent history.

For everything stated here, we join in this column with the request made to the Illustrious Municipality of Loja through the mayor, by the Association of Lojanos Residents in Quito, so that said request is accepted and this well-deserved recognition is made official in the person of Efraín Borrero , since we believe that the merits he accredits for this are more than sufficient and give us the assurance that the historical contributions of such a distinguished and appreciated Loja citizen on all four sides, will meet all expectations, as they have been doing until now, with the dissemination of stories about Loja and its characters, from its radio-television space, and from its journalistic column; which increase the collection of abundant, deep and valuable historical research, duly documented and contrasted.
