Due to a block of ice that hit him on the face, the man suffered a serious injury to one eye. Rescue from snowmobiles and helicopter
SAPPADA. Shortly after 1pm, on a call to Nue112, a rescue intervention was concluded shortly before 4pm for a climber who was injured while climbing an icefall in the sector near the Rio Siera called the Mirror of Snow White.
Because of a block of ice that hit him in the facea sixty year old from Spresiano suffered an apparently serious injury to one eye. The Sores alerted the Sappada Alpine and Speleological Rescue station which gathered with four technicians to go to the attack on the ice wall.
Thanks to the snowmobiles of the Police, on duty at the Nevelandia pitches, and of Promotur, the four technicians quickly reached their goal by taking a direct route.
Meanwhile, the injured’s climbing partners had lowered him to the ground – the accident occurred at the second length of the rope – and the injured man remained always present and stable until the rescuers arrived.
Rescuers embarked and carried him downhill along a second route, to avoid some fallen trees on the uphill path that would have complicated the passage, and in about thirty minutes they led him downstream. In the meantime, the regional helicopter rescue had arrived on the spot for other calls related to accidents pertaining to the Nevelandia pitches and the ski slopes and Sores advised that the injured icer should also be subjected to examination by the ship’s doctor. In the meantime, the injured person had some fainting, probably also due to being stationary in the cold after the accident, and it was considered appropriate, following the evaluation of the regional helicopter rescue doctor, to take him to hospital for checks, after having awaited the arrival of the Suem di Pieve di Cadore helicopter.
