Tongeren –
The joint trade union front of ACOD, ACV and VSOA will also take action in the prisons this week. The unions have announced this. An action will take place in Tongeren today.
Today there will be a strike picket in Tongeren (Limburg), Tuesday in Bruges (West Flanders) and Beveren (East Flanders) and Wednesday in Wortel (Antwerp) and Nivelles (Walloon Brabant). It is not yet clear where there will be actions on Thursday and Friday.
No new consultation with Minister of Justice Paul Van Tigchelt has been planned for the time being, says De Smedt. “He continues to push things aside and not address the real problems.”
Since Monday, April 1, an indefinite wardens’ strike has been going on in Belgian prisons, in protest against overcrowding and staff shortages.
The demands of the unions remain the same this week, namely to stop the requisition of personnel in the first 48 hours of an action, a pause button on the execution of short sentences and more personnel.
