Apple Maps report: Topographic maps coming to iPhone and Mac | News

Thu, 11:50·Software·bkThe days when Apple neglected its in-house map service are long gone: the company is striving to make the app a true all-rounder, but still has a lot to do to achieve this. Some features are implemented better by the competition or are simply not available. For the upcoming major releases of iOS, macOS and visionOS, Cupertino appears to be taking on the application once again and implementing a function that has so far been reserved exclusively for Apple Watch users.

Topographic details for the maps app
watchOS 10 brought with it a number of improvements, and the map service was not left out: Thanks to the topographical maps for selected areas, the app now displays hiking trails, for example, mentioning their name, length, level of difficulty and altitude. The paths also provide information about sights. This is not only useful for hikers, but generally for users who are committed to various outdoor activities. However, there is a downer: the topographical details are currently largely limited to national parks – and only in the USA. MacRumors reports lines of code that indicate the implementation of the feature for iOS, visionOS and macOS. Apple is likely to draw attention to the updated maps during WWDC when iOS 18, macOS 15 and visionOS 2 are presented.

Innovations only in the USA for now?
It is to be feared that Apple will deliver the final versions of the above-mentioned operating systems in this country in the fall without topographical information on the map material and will once again initially supply the USA. Another improvement to the app is also said to have already been leaked: The application could finally enable the setting up of user-defined routes, but this is also a function that is currently only being used in the United States (see here).
