Pull around the lake in a handcart, accompanied by beer, schnapps or cola. Father’s Day is a wet and happy affair for many Schleswig-Holsteiners. But when there is a lot of alcohol, some people lose their inhibitions. The result: disturbances of the peace, damage to property or fights. The police know what to expect on Ascension Day. That’s why, according to the state police, there will be significantly more officers on the road in Schleswig-Holstein than usual, in some places with emergency trains and task forces. According to press spokesman Marcel Schmidt, the police want to help ensure that this holiday is peaceful for everyone involved.
Popular meeting places in focus
The places where many celebrants traditionally meet are well known. The police and security services will carry out increased checks here. There are many recurring areas of focus for the state police at Ascension Day:
the Kiel Schrevenpark the coastal areas in the Plön district bathing areas in Ratzeburg and Mölln (Duchy of Lauenburg district) the Menzer-Werft-Platz in Geesthacht (Duchy of Lauenburg district) the Lütjensee (Stormarn district) the “Utspann” car park in Bargteheide (Stormarn district) the harbor in Kollmar (Steinburg district) the Kaltenkirchen amusement park (Pinneberg district) around the Great Segeberger Lake (Segeberg district)
As a precaution, the castle garden in Eutin (Ostholstein district) remains closed. In addition, the city of Segeberg has officially closed the oven meadow, including the parking lot and helipad, for the holiday.

Use with tact
The state police don’t want to act as a “spoilsport”: “Young people and other celebrants,” explains Marcel Schmidt from the state police office, “should have fun on Ascension Day.” The police are not opposed to this. The officials will proceed “with a sense of proportion and the necessary tact and rely on dialogue with the population,” said the spokesman. At the same time, he emphasizes that the emergency services will also “take consistent action” if necessary, for example in the event of damage to property, excessive alcohol consumption, disturbances of the peace due to loud shouting or excessively loud music, as well as physical injuries.
Appell: Don’t drink and drive!
According to the police, event-related traffic checks are also possible on Schleswig-Holstein’s streets. Because people get behind the wheel drunk all the time, especially on Father’s Day. Marcel Schmidt therefore once again urges people not to “drive a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.” According to Schmidt, this also includes the so-called e-scooters.
But drinking and driving should not only be taboo on land: the water police have announced that they will start the next few weeks of inspections on Ascension Day. Charter boats and privately used pleasure boats in particular are checked more closely.
