Assaeroporti breaks up, AdR and Save leave

by admin

After the disagreement on the choice of the new president of Assaeroporti, the definitive split arrived. Aeroporti di Roma, the first Italian airport company, has formalized the decision to leave the association of national airports. The same move by Save, which manages the Venice airport, together with the subsidiaries Aer Tre (Treviso) and Catullo (Verona and Brescia). With the split, two management companies come out which, before the pandemic, represented about 40% of traffic in Italy. AdR and the Save group have already formed the Aeroporti 2030 association, which calls for an acceleration of commitments for sustainability and innovation.

The motivations of AdR and Save. Differences already on Borgomeo

AdR motivated the exit with the difficulties of dialogue within the association. Aeroporti di Roma “has communicated to Assaeroporti, with regret, its decision to leave the Association, having already observed for months the impossibility at this time to carry on a fruitful dialogue on central themes such as sustainability, intermodality and digital innovation, ”says the Atlantia subsidiary. The reasons communicated by Save, Aer Tre and Catullo are similar. The withdrawal will start from January 1, 2022. The differences emerged already in May, in the laborious procedure that led to the election of the new president, Carlo Borgomeo, president of Gesac of Naples.

Clash between the F2i front and the Benetton-Atlantia front

Gesac is controlled by the F2i fund and by the partner Ardian, through 2i Aeroporti Spa, which is also a major shareholder of the Sea of Milan and controls other airports, from Trieste to Olbia. Borgomeo is the successor of Fabrizio Palenzona, expressed instead by the Benetton-Atlantia line-up. On June 25, AdR and Save (which has shareholders other than the Benetton group) abstained from voting at the meeting. Previously in the board of directors Borgomeo’s candidacy had received 8 votes against 7. The assembly of associates elected him president with 109 votes in favor, 50 abstentions, two blank ballots.

A new association established, Aeroporti 2030

Rome and the Venice group have expressed doubts about the choice, not the figure of the new president, but because they consider it an imposition by F2i without a discussion on the most urgent issues for airports. On 25 June, while the Assaeroporti assembly was underway, AdR and Save announced the birth of a new association, Aeroporti 2030, “with the aim of strengthening and promoting innovation, digitization and environmental sustainability of Italian airports” .

Refuse the charges

The CEO of Save, Monica Scarpa, did not accept the appointment to the board of directors of Assaeroporti. The CEO of AdR, Marco Troncone, did not accept the position of deputy vice president, although he remained on the board, even though he never showed up.
