Faustino Murillo Ramírez, mayor of Bajo Baudó, and several indigenous leaders once again warned about the death of children under five years of age from diseases associated with malnutrition and lack of drinking water. In less than eight days three died and others are sick.
The humanitarian crisis worsens in the indigenous communities of Bajo Baudó.
“For eight days we have been reporting an epidemic that has occurred in the indigenous communities of the Docampadó River, which has left three of our children dead to date. We urge that a working group be convened between the departmental Health Secretariat, Funsoba and the municipality, to find a solution to this problem,” said Mayor Murillo.
“There are 49 children with the same symptom: vomiting and diarrhea. There are many sick children there in the community and within that there are also adults with the same symptoms. Today they transferred a child here to the Pizarro hospital, he was brought in in a serious condition,” warns Albertina Valencia, councilor of Bajo Baudó.
According to the complaint of an indigenous leader of the community, the sick people are not receiving medical attention and, although they have a health center, they point out that there are no medical personnel or medicines.
“Here IPS Funsoba is not providing its services in the Bajo Baudó community. At this moment we have 45 sick children with symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, everything… and they are not providing us with service because we do not have medicine,” says the indigenous leader.
