Biden calls the border agreement “the strongest” in history

President Biden urges House Republicans to accept bipartisan border deal

In a meeting with governors at the White House on Friday, President Joe Biden urged House Republicans to accept the bipartisan border deal, calling it “the strongest border deal the country has ever seen.” The President emphasized the need for bipartisan efforts to reform the immigration system, highlighting the recent round of negotiations with Senate lawmakers and administration officials that resulted in some of the toughest border security measures in recent times.

“The bipartisan deal represents the fairest and most humane reforms in a long time. I didn’t get everything I wanted. It also includes the toughest set of reforms in history to secure the border,” Biden stated.

Governors across the country have been dealing with record levels of migrants at the US-Mexico border, with some states facing additional challenges due to actions taken by Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The White House has faced criticism from states seeking resources and policy changes to address the situation.

During the meeting, Biden handed out fact sheets detailing the border agreement to the governors and urged them to pressure Congress to approve the project. The President also called on governors to tell members of Congress who stand in the way to “show some courage.”

Biden pointed out that Republicans have hindered funding for governors whose states take in immigrants, noting that the Shelter and Services Program administered by the Department of Homeland Security has not been able to provide additional financial support since the end of Fiscal year 2023.

The President’s call for bipartisan support for the border deal comes as the country continues to grapple with immigration challenges, highlighting the need for comprehensive reform and increased resources to address the issue effectively.
