We have a unique opportunity to transform Italy from a digital and environmental point of view, to strengthen schools and health care, for work and growth; we cannot sacrifice it on the altar of partisan conveniences ».
If Conte and Salvini rode the suggestion of early elections, would they end up imposing a legitimate shop logic, or would they make an irresponsible choice?
“Sacrificing the country’s interests for personal or partial gain would be irresponsible. From anyone. Even the lesson that came to us from the national team led by Mancini is clear: the team wins, not the individual. Let’s think of Italy ».
The strategic choices are made by the government: don’t you think that the Democratic Party plays a remittance, limiting itself to a declaimed verbal opposition against the League?
“We are in a government of national responsibility that involves almost all political forces. Draghi is not a man alone in command, but the most authoritative figure that Italy has to keep the course in complicated waters and have credibility on the international and market level. Everyone can contribute, but the last thing you need is to plant party flags. Moreover, the ones that Salvini tried to put on all skipped because they were instrumental, most recently with the Green Pass ».
For years, the Democratic Party has consistently represented one in five voters: are you resigned to losing “good”?
«I believe there is a need to redefine a subject and a coalition around the policies of work and business, the environment and rights. It seems to me that the right has little to say on these issues, the cornerstones of the transformation underway in Europe. I see a huge space. I want a non-populist but more popular party, in which the leaders get more used to being in the territories. When I feel that we need to be present in the suburbs, I smile, because I have always frequented them, and it is good for everyone to come back. Courage and vision are needed, the changes that serve the country require politics and democracy. We must fight to advance civil rights while not forgetting social rights, if we do not want one part to be left behind or even cut off ».
Seen from the Po Valley, can the citizenship income remain as it is?
“Like Draghi, I think that a universal instrument to combat poverty is indispensable. In the crisis of the last year and a half, it has prevented the health emergency from becoming a social disaster. However, there are necessary corrections to be made, which as Regions we had reported in time. Intervening on the relationship with earned income, for example, can eliminate contradictory or even counterproductive effects. But this does not mean eliminating the citizenship income ».
According to recent estimates, Emilia-Romagna will grow in 2021 more than the main European macro-regions: net of complacency, did you “hatch” something special during Covid?
“There are three factors that make Emilia-Romagna a locomotive in Italy and in Europe. The first is the strong manufacturing and export vocation: we have supported it, creating supply chains that have no equal in the world. The second is an industrial policy that sees us excel in the most advanced frontiers of big data and artificial intelligence. The third factor is the quality of institutional and social relations, with the Pact for Work and Climate signed by all the social partners. It is unique on a national level: institutions and universities, businesses and trade unions, professions and the third sector, up to environmental associations, together to define the strategic choices of the region ». –
