Buschmann: “Today there is no longer one family ideal”

On International Family Day (May 15), Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) emphasized the diverse forms of living together and assuming responsibility. For many people, the family “continues to be the way of life of choice,” said Buschmann on Sunday in Berlin. But it is also true: “Today there is no longer one family ideal – but many.”

The diversity of living together is greater than it was a few decades ago. There are also “forms of assuming responsibility beyond the family,” said Buschmann. The law must be open to these developments and have the right rules ready for separated and rainbow families or senior living communities.

His goal is a modernization of family law. For the near future, the FDP politician announced proposals for a reform of the law of descent and a legal institution of the community of responsibility. In 1993, the United Nations designated May 15 as International Family Day.
