Three convictions and a flurry of acquittals and prescriptions for the crime. After almost 10 years of debate, the trial on alleged insurance fraud ends.
There were 43 people involved in this trend, all residing in various centers in the province of Vibo Valentia.
The people convicted on the basis of the sentence issued by judge Tiziana Macrì, president of the Collegiate Court (alongside Roberta Ricotta and Laerte Conti), are Domenicantonio Arena, aged 49, Giovanni Battista Arena (39) and Mylene Molina (60) from Tropea. For them the sentence is two years of imprisonment, acquitted on other charges. For the first two, defended by the lawyer Francesco Rombolà, the prosecutor had asked for a 10-year sentence while for the third, defended by Michele Accorinti, 8 years. During the sentencing, the crime of association was dropped, resulting in a significant reduction in the amount of the penalties. The Court instead cleared Antonio Arena, Maria Carmela Arena, Sarina Margherita Nicolaci, Maria Antonia Nicolaci, Graziella Arena, Giovanni Battista Arena, Palma Paglianiti, from the charges. Domenico Solano, Gessica Solano, Antonio Barbieri, Stefano Preiti, Emanuela Currà, Domenico Preiti, Rocco Durante, Giuseppe Greco, Salvatore Barbieri, Maria Concetta Mazzeo, Concetta Lucifero, Giammaicol La Torre, the lawyer Giuseppe Santamaria and Giasmara La Torre.
Other crimes charged to some of the accused have expired.
The investigation called “Dirty business” revolved around a series of accidents and medical certificates deemed bogus and produced to obtain compensation not due. According to the prosecution, the alleged criminal association – a crime contested at the conclusion of the investigation – began to operate throughout the province of Vibo Valentia from 2007 until 2015.
