Colombian photojournalist Federico Ríos, finalist in the Pulitzer Prizes

Colombian photojournalist Federico Ríos has been selected among the finalists for the prestigious Pulitzer Prizes in the category of best international reportage. Along with reporter Julie Turkewitz, Ríos was recognized for his immigration coverage of the Darien Gap for The New York Times.

The Pulitzer Prize board, belonging to Columbia University in New York, highlighted Ríos’ work as an “immersive and ambitious work of the migratory purgatory” that exists in the jungle enclave between Colombia and Panama.

The independent photojournalist, with more than 10 years of experience, has documented the migratory flow in the Darién jungle for a long time. His collaboration with Turkewitz, who covers the Andean region for The New York Times, has led to powerful reporting that explores the complexities of migration in the region.

Among the nominated projects are pieces such as «A ticket to Disney? Politicians charge millions to send immigrants to the US”, “The United States left them behind. They crossed a jungle to get here anyway” and “She heeded Biden’s warning to immigrants. He’ll regret it?”.

In addition to his work in the Darién Gap, Ríos has stood out in other photographic projects, such as his entry into the ranks of the FARC in 2012, where he managed to capture unique images of the guerrillas.

The Colombian photojournalist has also been awarded awards such as the Visa Pour L’image and the POY Latam 2023, and has published two books with his photographic material: “El Camino del Condor” (2012) and “Fiestas de San Pacho, Quibdó” (2013). His work, specialized in social issues in Latin America, is regularly published in international media and publications.
