Councilor of Elva: “Doe torn apart by wolves not far from the center of Prazzo”. The mountain pasture season is worrying

An adult doe killed and mauled by a pack of wolves. The animal’s carcass, weighing more than 100 kg, was found this morning (Friday 22 April) in Prazzo, in the upper Maira valley, in a meadow not far from the town. To report the case the secretary of Alte Terre and municipal councilor of Elva, Mariano Allocco, who comments: «The wolf question does not only concern breeding, it concerns living in the mountain. It has impacts that must be explained and understood. Seen from the city, the wolf is a totem representing freedom. Lived from up here, it is a limitation of freedoms ». And he underlines: «Agriculture is already under attack due to the presence of wild animals, now breeding is under attack due to the lack of control of the wolf. The issue also concerns the safety of people, of course, and must be dealt with as soon as possible by politics. The wolf plan has been lying in the drawers of the Ministry for too many years ». What is worrying is the coming season of the mountain pastures, with over 350 breeders from the Granda who in a few weeks will move to the mountains with their herds and flocks.

The secretary of the Piedmont Alpine Pastures Defense Association (Adialpi) and margaro di Crissolo, Giovanni Dalmasso: «The greatest criticality at the moment is the persistent drought. If it does not rain heavily or the snow returns, the springs will dry up in the summer and many pastures will be abandoned. The wolf is an equally serious, if not greater, problem. Now the predator no longer fears man, it approaches, even invades the plains. We farmers are afraid, for our animals, our families, our children. One of the two: either we defend ourselves, getting into trouble because shooting the wolf is illegal, or we get back to the law that protects the wolf, with a serious program of selective killing ».
