The measurements taken on the island

Starting from Wednesday 14 July the authorities of Malta will require all travelers from abroad to present the certificate of vaccination against Covid-19. This is what was announced by the Minister of Health, Chris Fearne, who also announced the closure of English-language schools starting next week following a peak of cases recorded on the island.

“We will be the first country in Europe to take this step,” the minister told the press. “We are not changing other parts of our (reopening) plan for now, but we will if science suggests we should,” he added. The measure will also have an impact on unvaccinated local residents who plan trips abroad, the minister said.

“The rules are the same as in the red zone countries. People without a vaccination certificate cannot travel without authorization, for any reason. Unvaccinated people must have permission from the Superintendency for Public Health to enter or leave the country” , he added, also specifying that all unvaccinated Maltese residents currently abroad will have to be quarantined upon their return and will have to notify health authorities before returning to Malta. Currently the Maltese government only requires travelers from the UK to present proof of vaccination to enter the country, while a negative test certificate is sufficient for visitors from other countries. The new measure was announced after that Malta has seen the number of active virus cases increase five times over the past ten days. Yesterday 96 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded on the island and for the fourth consecutive day the number of new cases of the virus doubled compared to the previous one.
