At the N-VA New Year’s reception, Bart De Wever reiterates his ambition to become Prime Minister of a business cabinet soon after the government. He doesn’t say a word about Vlaams Belang.

2024 must be the year of the major confederal change, that is what N-VA chairman Bart De Wever swears in every action. A deal with Paul Magnette’s PS is then inevitable. Not that you notice much of that in his speech at his party’s traditional New Year’s reception. As usual, De Wever takes a hard line against everything Walloon red.
“The PS’s discourse is hallucinatory, but it does have the advantage of clarity: as long as there is still one euro in a Flemish savings account, the PS will cling to the status quo.” PS doesn’t want to hear about hard work, that’s for the Flemish. They do not sanction the unemployed. Illegal aliens should be able to build up social rights. And economic growth is not necessary either.
And Vivaldi also has to suffer as usual. “If mismanagement were a sport, Vivaldi would be on the podium of the European Championship in all disciplines: Gold for taxes on labor, gold for debt growth, silver for highest government expenditure, silver for worst budget, bronze for lowest economic growth expectations.”

De Wever does not say a word about that rival on the right, Vlaams Belang. He sees little point in looking for a boxing match with VB chairman Tom Van Grieken. However, he will have to beat that party to remain the largest in Flanders. And that is and remains the ambition. “We are going to do everything we can to finally bring this country to a turning point. And for this the N-VA must be the leading force in the north. If we succeed, if we gain that confidence, then I want to take the lead. Not because it is my burning personal ambition. But because my heart beats for what yours beats: for Flanders and Prosperity.”
He repeats it again in front of the TV cameras. He is prepared to become prime minister of a business cabinet, a small team that must put its budget in order. “If I don’t do it, it will be Paul Magnette,” he said. “But never Vivaldi again. Never again a prime minister who chooses his own career.”
In addition, De Wever honored all his party leaders for the election year, including independent party leader Jean-Marie Dedecker. This year’s traditional DJ set is by Anneleen Van Bossuyt, the East Flemish House leader. She played Kernkraft 400 by Zombie Nation, Erop en over by Pommelien Thijs and – of course – Vlaanderen boven by Raymond van het Groenewoud.
