“We risk giving the wrong signal. In recent years in my city we have never increased the Tari. We have increased separate waste collection, which today has reached almost 50% and will continue to grow, and it is a job we have done without causing the the cost of personnel on citizens”. The mayor of Bari, Antonio Decaro, said this on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new municipal collection center in the Poggiofranco district. This is how Decaro responded to those who asked him whether the Tari is destined to increase by 50%.
“The consequences – he added – would be devastating because the costs become unmanageable”. Decaro explained that the cost “increases due to a ruling regarding the incompatibility of Arera, the national agency that manages tariffs. That ruling contrasts with the rule which, a few years ago, had given Arera the possibility of establishing the tariffs of the facilities”. “This – he specified – is a national problem, not just a local one, and will have consequences for the whole country”. Decaro called for “a rule that can explicitly declare the possibility for Arera to establish tariffs, because the increase risks putting the entire waste system in crisis”.
