Don Biancalani exhibits boat-symbol to remember the exodus of migrants – Tuscany

In front of church. ‘They tell us there is an increase in departures from Senegal and Gambia’

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 15 – “A boat in front of a church shouldn’t shock or surprise anyone, because the boat is one of the oldest Christian symbols, before the Cross”. So Don Massimo Biancalani, parish priest of Vicofaro in Pistoia, known for his activity of welcoming migrants, today inaugurating an installation in front of the church to remember the tragedy of migrants from Africa. A small fishing boat is on display.

“This installation – explains Don Massimo – wants to be a testimony for passers-by, to remember this human tragedy that continues. Among other things, the signals we have, especially from Senegal and Gambia, are that many people are leaving”.

On board “small boats like this one displayed here – explained Don Massimo -, migrants do not arrive from Libya, but from Tunisia. On boats like this one, which was donated to us by a fisherman from Vada (Livorno), they board even ten”. “The boat – underlines the priest – is a symbol of salvation. Clearly for anyone who launches into the Mediterranean it is the means needed to reach the ‘promised land’ and we too want to contribute with this symbolic gesture, as well as with deeds, to their exodus towards a promised land, Europe, which unfortunately is increasingly becoming an inaccessible ‘fortress'”.
