“El Chapo” Guzmán asked that his calling and visiting privileges be restored in the maximum security prison

Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the notorious drug lord serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado, has requested the restoration of his communication privileges, including the ability to make telephone calls and receive visitors. In a letter addressed to federal Judge Brian Cogan, Guzmán emphasized his desire for his wife, Emma Coronel, and his daughters to visit him, noting that his daughters could only do so during school vacations due to their educational commitments in Mexico.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, Guzmán’s wife, recently completed a 36-month sentence for money laundering and conspiracy charges related to her involvement in Guzmán’s prison escape plans in 2015. Guzmán also highlighted that he had been restricted from contacting his daughters by telephone since May 2023, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communication with his family.

Guzmán, who was convicted in 2019 for large-scale drug trafficking and conspiracy to murder as the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, is seeking to continue receiving the two monthly 15-minute telephone calls that he had previously been authorized to have. The prison authorities’ restriction on his communication with his daughters prompted Guzmán to describe the situation as “unprecedented discrimination” and request Judge Cogan’s intervention.

The complexities of the prison system in the United States and the conditions of isolation faced by high-profile inmates like Guzmán are highlighted by this request. Judge Cogan’s response to Guzmán’s plea for restitution of communication privileges could have far-reaching implications for both Guzmán and other inmates in similar circumstances.
