The telecom law will be amended so that emergency calls will from now on always be forwarded to the emergency services. In the future, not only the Proximus network can be used to forward emergency calls, but the network of a second operator must also be available. This is reported by Minister of Telecom Petra De Sutter (Green), who received the green light for her plans from the Council of Ministers on Friday.

The adjustments come after the emergency numbers were recently inaccessible several times due to a breakdown at Proximus. They apply to all emergency numbers, not just 101 and 112.

A sector fund will be established to finance the so-called redundant network, De Sutter said on Sunday. “Telephone calls to emergency services will therefore always be connected via the infrastructure of two operators, instead of one as is currently the case. A fund containing money from operators will finance that network,” the minister concludes.
