Chemnitz University of Technology invites those interested April 27, 2024, from 6 p.m., We warmly invite you to the “Long Night of Sciences” as part of the TUC Day. Many rooms, test fields and laboratories will be open to the public on the Reichenhainer Straße campus and in the university library, Straße der Kulturen 33, until midnight. With 85 program items, the “Long Night of Sciences” offers a fascinating and comprehensive insight into numerous areas of Chemnitz University of Technology and invites you to discover, be amazed and have conversations with scientists.

Discover research and become active yourself

The “Long Night of Sciences” program includes numerous offerings from all faculties and several central facilities at Chemnitz University of Technology, for example:

Die “Experience world of mechanical engineering” (2 p.m. to 10 p.m.): Here, researchers from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering present state-of-the-art manufacturing technology in a creative way. The focus is on 32 hands-on activities for young and old, including: the production of the “JackBot”, duck fishing on a machine tool or the encounter with a robot that plays the guitar.
Experiments in the Research Center for Materials, Architectures and Integration of Nanomembranes (MAIN): Here, for example, nanomicroscopy building blocks for microrobots are folded, biological building blocks for classical electronics are made, nanoliter-sized drops are shown or it is explained that electrons and many atomic nuclei not only have an electrical charge, but also a magnetic moment – the so-called “spin”. You can guess together and have fun in a relaxed atmosphere „Escape Room Mathematik“.
guides through laboratories, clean rooms and research halls offer insights into various subject areas, including networked driving, movement science, micro and nanotechnologies, food production of the future and energy supply. If you want, you can also take part in a scavenger hunt through the Institute of Physics. In addition, it provides information University library about the history and architecture of its building – the traditional “Alte Aktienspinnerei” -, explains the library’s diverse offerings and presents many “treasures” from its holdings and that of the archive. At 7 p.m., those interested also have the opportunity to experience the production of the live podcast “Robots like us” by the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) “Hybrid Societies” in the university library. Guests include the Chemnitz artist Dagmar Ranft-Schinke, who will hand over the picture “I, the Robot” to the SFB.
Lectures such as the one on the question “How smart are robots really?”, on “Antiquity in computer games” and bird song recognition with the help of an app or on the energy transition in Germany provide background information and classifications on exciting topics from research at Chemnitz University of Technology. The end of the “Long Night of the Sciences” is the cross-faculty event Show lecture on the topic “FAIL: Small mishaps and major mishaps from chemistry, physics, computer science and mathematics”. In an entertaining and varied way, it shows that even if a project goes wrong, something useful can still come out of it.
