Fire brigade challenge at Zwickauer Stair Run | MDR.DE

What the Spitzhaus staircase is in Radebeul is the high-rise staircase in Zwickau. The organizers announced that 145 participants took part this year. They started their sprint every minute – from elementary school students to senior citizens.

Everyone who reached the top received a medal, and there were also certificates and prizes for the best runners in each age group. The best times for the stair race, which has been held annually since 2013, are under 40 seconds. The fastest this year was 16-year-old Janik Schuster. The athlete from SV Sachsen 90 Werdau needed 44.4 seconds.

Seven fire brigade teams also took on this special challenge. With all their equipment, they ran 166 steps to the top floor of a high-rise building – against time. They had to wear breathing masks and around 15 kilos of equipment. For Christian Grüner and Toni Schubert from the Zwickau professional fire department, the flight of stairs in their hometown was a kind of dress rehearsal. They want to compete in Berlin soon, at the so-called “Stair Run,” as they tell MDR SACHSEN. Then you have to climb 37 floors in a Berlin hotel. “That’s a different house number,” the two comrades laugh.
