Huge success in Paris: Alexander Zverev is back in the semifinals of the French Open just a year after his serious injury. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in four sets.
Zverev shouted his unbridled joy and let himself be celebrated by the raging fans. The Olympic champion continues his impressive comeback story at the French Open and is surprisingly back in the semi-finals of Paris just a year after his bad ankle injury. Hardly any experts had Zverev on their list before the tournament started – now he is suddenly only two steps away from fulfilling his lifelong dream of a Grand Slam title.

“I don’t know what to say. I’m just happy. It was the hardest year of my life and I’m happy to be back,” said Zverev to the cheers of the Paris crowd after the hard-fought 6th place :4, 3:6, 6:3, 6:4 in the quarterfinals against Etcheverry. With the next energy performance, the 26-year-old defeated his Argentine opponent and booked the ticket for the semi-finals in Roland Garros for the third time in a row.
In the semifinals against Norwegian Ruud
After 3:22 hours, Zverev converted his first match point on the largest court in Paris, Philippe Chatrier. On Friday, for the first time in the tournament, he will face a top ten player: Opponent in the semifinals is last year’s finalist Casper Ruud from Norway, who defeated the Dane Holger Rune in four sets.
