New hospitalization today for the Pope at the Gemelli Polyclinic, to be subjected in the early afternoon, explains the Vatican press office, to an operation under general anesthesia of laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with prostheses. The operation was arranged in recent days by the medical team assisting Francis, and was made necessary “because of an incarcerated incisional hernia that is causing recurring, painful and worsening sub-occlusive syndromes”. The stay at the health facility will last several days to allow for the normal post-operative course and full functional recovery.

Surgeon Alfieri will operate on the Pope, it’s the second time
It will be Sergio Alfieri, the surgeon who will operate again on Pope Francis at the Gemelli Polyclinic after the operation carried out in July two years ago for symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon. The surgeon has conducted more than 9,000 operations to date and comes from the direct line and school of surgeons close to the pontiffs. Alfieri was in fact a pupil of the surgeon Giovanni Battista Doglietto, who in turn was in the team of Francesco Crucitti, who went down in history as the surgeon of John Paul II for having operated on him three times.
