How fast is landline and mobile internet access in Germany compared to other countries? The monthly Global Speed ​​Index from the speed test provider Ookla provides information about this. The current figures for December 2023 provide an overview of the broadband ranking of 178 countries. According to Ookla’s evaluation, Germany can improve by one place in December compared to the previous month. Nevertheless, the Federal Republic only ranks 51st. In December, the average download speed (median value) in the landline network was 89.85 megabits per second (Mbit/s). For comparison: Singapore remains in first place with an average download speed of 270.62 Mbit/s. This is followed by Hong Kong with 266.63 Mbit/s and Monaco with 264.97 Mbit/s. In addition to Monaco, other European countries in the top 10 are Iceland (6th place, 249.32 Mbit/s) and France (10th place, 216.97 Mbit/s).

The last three places on the list are occupied by Syria (3.66 Mbit/s), Afghanistan (3.25 Mbit/s) and Cuba (2.5 Mbit/s).

Around 57 Mbit/s on average for downloads via mobile communications in Germany

When it comes to internet speeds in mobile networks, things are looking a little better for Germany at 45th place. The average download bandwidth remained unchanged at 57.41 Mbit/s in December. The mobile leader is the United Arab Emirates with 303.21 Mbit/s, followed by Qatar (244.44 Mbit/s) and Kuwait (183.83 Mbit/s). According to Ookla, the fastest place in Europe to surf using a smartphone is Denmark (5th place, 152.42 Mbit/s).

The Ookla Speed ​​Index provides further detailed data for Germany for both broadband and mobile communications. The average upload speed in the landline network is 31.87 Mbit/s. Singapore has an upload speed of 219.12 Mbit/s. The mobile upload speed in Germany is on average 12 Mbit/s, in the United Arab Emirates it is 28.38 Mbit/s.

Which internet provider was the fastest provider in Germany in the fourth quarter of 2023? Ookla sees the pure fiber optic provider Deutsche Glasfaser at the forefront with 201.43 Mbit/s.
