Girls from Chocó will represent Colombia in the International Robotics Tournament

by admin

Six girls from Chocó will be in charge of representing Colombia in the International Robotics Tournament, competing against other Latin American countries, the United States and Australia, from February 18 to 22 of this year, in the city of Medellín.

The girls belong to the Nuevo Amanecer ESAL Foundation of Chocó and are sponsored by the Motorola company.

The foundation is led by Quibdos psychologist Haidy Sánchez Mattsson, who has worked to offer training programs for girls and boys in vulnerable regions of Chocó, with a special focus on STEAM areas. This group of girls who are between 13 and 15 years old, five of Afro-descendant origin and one of indigenous ethnicity, was selected from three educational institutions in the municipality of Quibdó.

“I like robotics because I consider it to be our future and having knowledge about the subject opens doors in every way; also because I know that it is a way to help my department. I project myself as a woman capable of creating and transforming people’s lives through technological tools that allow us to build a better life, encouraging other young people to bet on their inventions and put them to use for the advancement of society,” says Maxdy. Lorena Perea Andrade, 13-year-old student at the Nuevo Amanecer ESAL Foundation.

On this occasion, Motorola provides the provision of branded devices to the students and teachers, and the transportation and maintenance of the girls in the tournament.

“For me it is very satisfying to see the growth and, above all, the commitment that this group has had. They are girls who live in very vulnerable settings who have demonstrated a high level of commitment. Every Saturday they meet with a team of teachers who advise them on practice and thanks to the alliance we have with the Global Art, Science and Technology organization, they connect digitally with several teachers from Antioquia who teach them all the theoretical part, this allows us today to have a place in the international competition, which gives me proud” confirms Haidy Sánchez Mattsson, director of the Nuevo Amanecer ESAL Foundation.
