In Bolivia, excessive rain continues to cause problems and the situation is being closely monitored in hundreds of municipalities and villages. According to authorities, at least 33 people have died since November as a result of heavy rains, which caused mudslides and flooding. The death toll is therefore significantly higher than in the same period last year, reports the BBC, among others.

The highest alert phase applies in 10 Bolivian municipalities and code orange – the second highest alarm phase – applies in 279 other villages and municipalities. Humanitarian aid was also sent to Achocalla, La Paz province, where a 35-year-old woman and her two children were buried by a mudslide that flooded their home. More than 20 people were injured in the incident.

In the meantime, the water level of various reservoirs that are in danger of bursting at the seams is also being watched with suspicion. The heavy rains in Bolivia followed a period of prolonged drought and after one of the warmest winters the country has ever experienced.
