Wuhan Expects 333 Million Tourists in 2023, Continues to Rank Among Top Ten Popular Tourist Cities in China

Wuhan, a city located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Han River, is expecting to welcome 333 million tourists in 2023, an increase of 62.4% from previous years. This will continue to solidify its position among the top ten popular tourist cities in China. The announcement was made by Mayor Cheng Yongwen during the two sessions of Wuhan City while delivering a government work report.

In recent years, Wuhan has implemented various cultural and tourism activities, as well as issued consumer vouchers to attract tourists. This has led to a significant increase in the city’s cultural tourism market, making it a popular destination for “special forces-style tourism” and “citywalk.”

Wuhan is known for its picturesque landscape, with the Yangtze River and its largest tributary, the Han River, naturally forming an urban geographical pattern with three towns standing on top of each other, a large river and a large lake. The city’s climate with four distinct seasons has earned it the reputation of being the “Flower City of Four Seasons.”

To further enhance its tourism offerings, Wuhan has introduced immersive performance projects, diversified performing arts categories, and sports events to provide new experiences for tourists and drive growth in the cultural tourism market.

Last year, Wuhan issued “Several Measures to Promote the High-Quality Development of the Cultural and Tourism Industry,” focusing on improving the development level of the cultural tourism industry, promoting integration and innovation of multiple business formats, and enhancing the cultural tourism consumer brand.

The Wuhan Municipal Government’s work report for this year proposed building the Guishan Snake Mountain area and the “Two Rivers and Four Banks” core cultural tourism area with high standards. Plans are also in place to promote the integration of culture and tourism through the construction of the Han Opera Museum and the Yangtze River Music and Culture Industrial Park.

Cai Xinyuan, a member of the Wuhan CPPCC and deputy dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, stated that while Wuhan has rich tourism resources, there is a need to improve the existing service quality, infrastructure, and management level while also cultivating emerging tourism consumption scenes using technological means to enhance tourists’ experience and participation.

With its strategic plans and dedication to improving its cultural and tourism offerings, Wuhan is on track to become a world-class tourism destination, attracting millions of tourists and further solidifying its position as one of China’s top tourist cities.
