When Ilaria Salisová (39) was brought to court in Hungary at the end of January with her hands and feet tied and chained, it caused public outrage in Italy.
The Italian woman was accused in the so-called case of anti-fascists. Her family and former fellow inmate claim that they kept her in inhumane conditions, complaining about bugs, the quality of food and hygienic conditions, among other things.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has good relations with the Hungarian ruling party, also commented on the case. She asked Budapest to respect the defendant’s rights, even calling Viktor Orbán himself.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the case a “violation of EU rules”.
Subject of the lawsuit
The Hungarian prosecutor’s office filed an indictment against three foreigners in the case of attacks in connection with the Day of Honor event last October. According to the indictment, a German citizen, for whom a European arrest warrant is issued, founded an organization in Leipzig in 2017 sympathetic to far-left ideology. The defendants were also members of this organization – a German, a German woman and an Italian woman.
They agreed that they would take violent action against sympathizers of the extreme right and on February 11, 2023, that is, on the Day of Honor, they would go to Budapest and attack the participants of the event.
