Republicans Fall Short in Impeachment Vote Against Mayorkas
In a surprising turn of events, House Republicans narrowly missed the mark in their attempt to remove Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas from office. Despite nearly unanimous support from the GOP, the efforts were thwarted by unified opposition from the Democratic ranks. The final result saw 216 votes against the impeachment, with all Democrats voting alongside three Republicans. California Rep. Tom McClintock and Colorado Rep. Ken Buck, along with Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, faithfully upheld their prior stance and voted against the measure. On the other side, the 214 Republicans who voted in favor accused Mayorkas of violating public trust and failing to comply with immigration laws, leading to an increase in irregular border crossings with Mexico.
Despite the disappointment, Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., expressed a determination to regroup and reassess the situation, although he admitted to feeling frustrated by the day’s outcome.
Notably, the absence of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise – who is currently recovering from a stem cell transplant in Louisiana – likely played a role in tipping the scales. Additionally, the Republican party is facing three vacancies in the House following the departure of Representatives Kevin McCarthy and Bill Johnson, as well as the expulsion of George Santos.

Democrats have decried the charges against Mayorkas as lacking justification for impeachment, arguing that they do not meet constitutional standards for high crimes and misdemeanors. Their contention is that the accusations are driven by partisanship rather than legitimate legal grounds.
Mayorkas, who is a former federal prosecutor, has come under intense scrutiny amid a wider political dispute over the Biden administration’s border policies. Legal experts such as Jonathan Turley and Alan Dershowitz have weighed in, opining that while criticisms of Mayorkas may be valid, they do not rise to the level of impeachable offenses.
