In the Netherlands, an inland vessel loaded with containers crashed into the Willemsbrug in Rotterdam on Friday morning. A number of containers fell into the water as a result. The ship is now stuck, reports a spokesperson for the Safety Region.

The containers that fell from the ship are empty. “So there is no question of dangerous substances being involved.” According to the spokesperson, it appears that no one was injured. It is now being investigated whether the bridge has suffered damage and whether pipes running through it have been damaged.

The incident happened right in the middle of the bridge, the spokesperson said. Other shipping can still pass through. Traffic on the bridge has been stopped.

It is not yet clear exactly what caused the ship to collide with the bridge and become stuck. The spokesperson does point out the vertical clearance of the bridge. “You are dealing with changing tides. Sometimes the water is lower than other times.” In consultation with the harbor master, we will determine how the ship can be released again.
