In the city shooting and shouting of joy from the Taliban

(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, AUGUST 30 – The last American planes left Kabul airport, putting an end to 20 years of war for the United States. The Pentagon announces it. At the news, gunshots were heard throughout the city of Kabul. The shots came in particular from the main Taliban checkpoints, while shouts of jubilation rose from positions in the former green zone.

“Tonight’s withdrawal means both the end of the evacuation of military material and the end of nearly 20 years of mission that began in Afghanistan shortly after 9/11,” announced General Kenneth McKenzie, chief of the US central command. “It is a mission that brought Osama Bin Laden to justice along with many al-Qaeda co-conspirators,” he continued. “The cost was 2,461 US military and civilians killed and over 20,000 wounded, including unfortunately the 13 Marines killed by a suicide bomber last week,” he added.
