A Venezuelan man living in the United States has sparked controversy with his TikTok videos claiming to live for free without paying rent or working. The man, known as Yimder, stated that he has been living in New York City for a year without any expenses, thanks to a $1,000 monthly support card provided by US authorities.

In response to critics who called him a “bad Venezuelan,” Yimder defended himself in his videos, stating that he receives support as a Venezuelan migrant and that it is not his fault that he does not have to work or pay rent in the US.

Yimder addressed the notion of what it means to be a “good Venezuelan,” questioning why working and paying rent should define one’s worth as a Venezuelan. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received and emphasized that he will continue to accept help as long as it is available to him.

Although Yimder was notified of his departure from the shelter in October 2023, he has remained there as the planned move did not materialize. Venezuelan migrants like Yimder have access to Temporary Protected Status in the US until September 2025, allowing them to live and work legally in the country.

As the debate continues over Yimder’s unconventional living situation, it raises questions about the support available to Venezuelan migrants in the US and the perceptions of what constitutes a “good Venezuelan.”
