On Monday, a volcano erupted about 30 kilometers from the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, according to the country’s meteorological service.

This is the third time in two years that lava flows have occurred in the area.

The Meteorological Department said in a statement that the eruption occurred in an area north of Mount Little Hurtor, indicating that “smoke rose in a northwest direction.”

Footage circulated by local media showed a large cloud rising from the ground and a heavy flow of lava.

An AFP correspondent indicated that the smoke could be seen from a road linking the capital and the international airport, pointing to cars that stopped and people taking pictures.

Thousands of earthquakes were recorded in the region about a week before the eruption, indicating that the magma had moved underground, and that the eruption was imminent.

The Icelandic authorities were advised not to go to the site pending an assessment of conditions.

Magma flowed from the ground at about 16:40 GMT, in an area a few kilometers away from two locations that have witnessed eruptions on two occasions in the last two years.

The first eruption was recorded on March 19, 2021 in the Geldingadalur Valley, and lasted for six months, while the second eruption was recorded on August 3, 2022 in the Miradalir Valley, and lasted for three weeks.
