Lavevaz and the war in Ukraine: “We look to Europe for clear and unequivocal answers”

“The principle of self-determination of peoples, which we recognize, can in no case be called into question to justify a military attack”. Erik Lavevaz said this when speaking on the situation created in Ukraine.

«We all listen with anguish – says the president of the Region – to the news coming from Eastern Europe. We are dismayed to hear words of war that we have chosen to ban by building a democratic Europe, proud of its differences and capable of looking to the common good. Our thoughts are turned to the women and men who live in Ukraine and who experience days of anxiety and suffering. In a complex scenario with unpredictable consequences, we can never ignore the thought that war is above all a moral defeat: it is the unjustifiable choice to renounce one’s humanity, to become judges of the right to life “.

According to Lavevaz “peaceful coexistence between different cultural roots is the essence of the world that we have built over the last sixty years, with generations of women and men who have founded their lives on peace and on the belief that war is not a ‘ option, as written in the Italian Constitution. We follow the frenetic evolution of the situation, expressing all our human and political solidarity with Ukrainian citizens and institutions. We look to Europe so that the Community institutions can formulate clear and unequivocal responses to this aggression which cannot be accepted ».

In the afternoon, the Valle Council will approve a document which, in addition to expressing solidarity with the Ukrainian people, asks the Valle d’Aosta parliamentarians “a concrete commitment” so that “in the appropriate forums there is a firm condemnation of this war”.
